This region was once known as Big Valley. Prior to the coming of the white man, it was a sacred place to the Paiute Indians.
"Mono" in Paiute means "beautiful", which aptly describes this highly scenic area. Precipitous canyons, crags, perennial snow and hot springs are interspersed with clear mountain streams and lakes. The valleys support intensive ranching, as well as providing a pastoral foreground to the rugged and scenic Sierra.
Breath taking scenery surrounds Bridgeport. The Bodie ghost town is just 30 minutes away. You can relax in natural hot springs. Off road trails surround the local area. Fall colors are fantastic.
Bridgeport developed as a trade and supply center for the near by gold mining camps, as well as a logging town supplying building materials and mining timber for Aurora, Masonic and Bodie. It became the Mono County seat, and today boasts of having the second oldest courthouse in California.
